Originally a pastel studies from Eugène Delacroix, he was a leader of the French Romantic movement. Inspired by an 1821 play by the English Romantic poet Lord Byronn this expressive image of one of the concubines, a figure recoils from a blow but its sensual drama is representative of the Romantic period and is enhanced by the gallery by adding extra movement, abstract in nature it can be viewed upon as an image of pain whilst also having potential to be viewed blindly not knowing the original content, as a vision of sexual ecstasy in motion.
