After being diagnosed with an autoimmune illness and withstanding sustained periods of hospitalization, Mikkel turned to art as a means of creative therapy and rehabilitation.
Whilst in remission she suffered a stroke, following this she had to relearn many skills, including her speech and fluid mobility.
This experience influenced her evolved style and approach to work, allowing her to reconsider materials and scale.
Mikkel grew up in the industrial north of England. A painter with a bold distinctive style, her approach remains instinctive and primitive.
