Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram better known by his regnal name Shah Jahan ( “King of the World”) and was the fifth Mughal emperor, who reigned from 1628 to 1658.

He is widely considered one of the greatest Mughal emperors; under his reign the Mughal Empire reached the peak of its glory. Although an able military commander, Shah Jahan is perhaps best remembered for his architectural achievements.

His reign ushered in the golden age of Mughal architecture. Shah Jahan commissioned many monuments, the best known of which is the Taj Mahal in Agra, which entombs his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Her death had a profound impact on Shah Jahan’s personality and inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal, where she was later reburied.
